What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is elevated pressure on the eye caused by difficulties in draining the liquid that circulates in the eye. This heightened pressure gradually damages the retina, causing loss of peripheral vision.

Glaucoma is the third major cause of blindness and affects approximately 2 percent of the population aged 40 and over. Something to think about! Glaucoma can be associated with such conditions as diabetes, accidents, trauma or prolonged use of certain medications.

Glaucoma is rarely manifested by symptoms; early screening is required so that it can be treated appropriately and complications avoided.

A person suffering from glaucoma must apply drops to the eyes regularly. In rare cases, surgery may be required.
