Babies’ Eye Health
For children aged 0 to 24 months, a visit to the optometrist is advised at around 6 months of age. Proper care of babies’ eyes right from birth is critical!
Ninety percent of the time, for instance, a red and swollen eye is a sign of infection. There are three types of infection:
- Bacterial (heavily swollen eyelids, pus and considerable redness)
- Viral (watery eyes, moderate redness)
- Allergic (stinging, hot and watering eyes with low to moderate redness)
Consult an optometrist for a prescription of the appropriate treatment and medication if required.
Some helpful hints
- Examine your child’s eyes for swelling, redness or secretions.
- Consult an optometrist if signs appear abnormal.
- Look for glints of whiteness in the pupil (the dark part of the eye).
- Watch for signs your child is rubbing their eyes or crying when you touch the areas around their eyes.
